As reported in
NIC
VOICE Jurisdictional
Conference Update
(#1), July 1, 2004,
the following candidate was included on the
NIC
VOICE list:
Mark Horst, pastor at Park
Avenue United Methodist Church,
Minneapolis. Endorsed by the Minnesota
Annual Conference
Rev. Mark
Horst of Park Avenue UMC in
Minneapolis has been a prominent
figure in rejecting the
licitness of homosexual
relationships, saying that a
minister can furnish
wholehearted pastoral care to a
homosexual while disapproving of
their sexual conduct.
“My
feeling is the Book of
Discipline’s core teaching
represents Jesus Christ’s
compassion as well as his
teaching on human sexuality. The
current teaching isn’t
preventing any United Methodist
church from being in effective
ministry with gay and lesbian
people,” Horst said. “The church
is deeply polarized on this
issue and it’s a pretty shrill
discussion. I’d like to see a
little more humility all
around.”

Subject: Overlooked Bishop canidate
I thought you should know that Dr. Mark Horst
of the Minnesota Annual
Conference has had his name placed in nomination for Bishop. His name
and picture to appear on the North Central Jurisdictional web page
under Bishop candidates. He was not endorsed by the MN Annual
Conference nor the Jurisdiction delegation due to his conservative
theology, ( they have affirmed his ability, but would only endorse
David Bard, saying something like they believed they could only
nominate one individual).
Mark is one of the Vice Presidents to the Confessing Movement Board of
Directors.
This is his "resume" from the Confessing movement page...
Dr. Mark Lewis Horst,
Vice President
Dr. Mark Horst graduated from Carleton College with a Bachelor of Arts
in 1977. He continued his education at Yale University, New Haven,
Connecticut where he received a Masters of Divinity in 1981 and a Ph.D
in 1985. He was named a John Wesley Fellow by A Foundation for
Theological Education in 1981.
Currently serving as Senior Pastor at Park Avenue United Methodist
Church, Minneapolis, MN. Park Avenue is a racially diverse, inner city
congregation which has effectively reached the city with the gospel of
Jesus Christ. Park Avenue draws its membership from throughout the Twin
Cities and has a worship attendance averaging 1,300. Dr. Horst is also
Adjunct Professor of Theology, United Theological Seminary.
Before beginning his ministry at Park Avenue United Methodist Church,
Dr. Horst served as pastor of Fairmont Avenue United Methodist Church,
MN, assistant professor of Religion, St. Olaf College, and associate
pastor of Excelsior United Methodist Church, MN.
He has published a number of articles for The Christian Century, The
Catholic Worker, Quarterly Review, and other Christian publications. He
is a highly sought after speaker and has delivered multiple lectures
for a variety of institutions. These include: St. John’s University,
St. Paul’s Seminary, St. Paul Council of Churches and Church Women
United, Evangelical Fellowship of United Methodists, The Confessing
Movement, and The Good News Movement, the Wisconsin Annual Conference,
The East Ohio Annual Conference and Dubuque Seminary. Dr. Horst has
served as a delegate to General Conference, North Central
Jurisdictional Conference.
I hope that you will include him in your episcopal candidate list.
Thank you.
Rev. Paul Kobi
