New Northern Illinois Conference Reporter Reports

Bishop Jung is committed to spirituality, justice, evangelism (July 30)

Jung said he is committed to working toward inclusiveness in the Church. “I believe the Kingdom of God calls for racial equality, gender equality and sexual orientation equality,” he said. “Inclusiveness is the gift of God.”   Read More

Bishop Jung to lead Northern Illinois (July 23)

This link is to an article published by the Northern Illinois Conference in The Report.  There is a photo of Bishop Jung being escorted.  Traditionally, the two bishops who escort a newly elected bishop are the newly elected bishop's own bishop (thus Bishop Rader) plus a bishop who is special to the newly elected bishop.

7/29/04 Bishops' elections show progress in diversity

United Methodist bishops' elections this year continued to show progress in racial-ethnic and gender inclusion, although still not at a pace many delegates seek.
While some Southeastern delegates complained of racism in their proceedings (see below), Western delegates celebrated the diversity of their episcopal leadership. Continued »

CORNET

CORNET stands for COvenant Relationships NETwork. CORNET seeks to continue the tradition of hosting worship services that celebrate and witness to same-gender covenant relationships in United Methodist churches and resists actions that try to withdraw this means of grace from same-gender persons. It also seeks to educate people about this concern; therefore this web site includes links and some materials that do not agree with CORNET's views.

UMCalledOut · "Called Out" LGBT Religious News

Gay Bishop Candidate Broke New UMC Territory

The Rev. Frank Wulf, a 49-year-old campus minister at UCLA received

about 15% of the votes of delegates from the six conferences or

regional areas in the Western United States. Rev. Wulf had a broad

base of support and had been endorsed by the Methodist Federation for

Social Action (MFSA) chapter in the California-Pacific Conference

(Cal-Pac), and by the United Methodists in Campus Ministry

Coordinating Committee.

A native of San Diego, Rev. Wulf holds a degree in literature and

mathematics with highest distinction from UCSD and graduated in 1981

from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He has

completed coursework and exams for the Ph.D. from Columbia University

and Union Theological Seminary in New York. He has taught Hebrew

Bible and Hebrew language. Besides his campus ministry experience, he

has had parish ministry experience. (His profile is at

http://rmcumc.org/wj/Wulf.htm .)

While the issue of homosexuality has been a painful one across the

denomination, the history-making moment of this particular nomination

is that Rev. Wulf's orientation was not an issue; instead his gifts

and graces for episcopacy were the focus conversation and interviews.

It was not a dividing issue at this meeting. Rev. Wulf said in a pre-

conference statement, "The Western Jurisdiction, with its 'peculiar

patterns of diversity' is poised to model a new understanding

of 'church' in which we transcend our disagreements to grow in

Christian love for each other." He pointed out that the diversity of

the West includes race, culture, language, geography, class, age,

economic status, sexual orientation, gender, theology and

religion. "This jurisdiction is truly a microcosm of the world."

Rev. Wulf said, "We need leaders skilled in dialogue and conflict

resolution - leaders who can bring persons of conflicting viewpoints

together in settings of respect, caring and hope to do the work of

evangelism, justice, education, worship, and pastoral care. We are

called and empowered by the Holy Spirit to join a movement that

brings good news to the poor, proclaims release to prisoners, offers

recovery of sight to the blind, sets the oppressed free, and

announces the era of God's favor. We are called to take part in

building God's community in our place and time."
