05/26/04... United Methodists from across
the country attending their quadrennial jurisdictional conferences in July
will elect 20 new bishops to episcopal leadership posts, signaling one of
the largest turnovers in spiritual and administrative oversight within
recent memory.

Conference delegate rips media coverage -
Gay issue not central to the discussions "...The
Rev. Margaret M. Mallory, district superintendent of Toledo, said
she will introduce a resolution to the full plenary session tomorrow
afternoon that says "we are not of one mind" on the issue of
homosexuality, and that recommends the church "agrees to disagree"
on the issue. The key to the debate over homosexuality, Ms. Mallory
said, is whether people "are born that way or whether it is
something they choose." If homosexuality is a genetic trait in
which people have no choice, "then what kind of God would condemn
them to hell?" she asked. While scientists and sociologists
continue to research the causes of homosexuality, Ms. Mallory said,
"If I am going to err, then I am going to err on the side of love."

Great Rivers Annual Conference. Endorsed by the Black Clergywomen of the
United Methodist Church.
-
Mark Horst,
pastor at Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Minneapolis. Endorsed
by the Minnesota Annual Conference
Rev. Mark Horst of Park Avenue UMC in
Minneapolis has been a prominent figure in rejecting the
licitness of homosexual relationships, saying that a minister
can furnish wholehearted pastoral care to a homosexual while
disapproving of their sexual conduct.
“My feeling is the Book of Discipline’s
core teaching represents Jesus Christ’s compassion as well as
his teaching on human sexuality. The current teaching isn’t
preventing any United Methodist church from being in effective
ministry with gay and lesbian people,” Horst said. “The church
is deeply polarized on this issue and it’s a pretty shrill
discussion. I’d like to see a little more humility all around.”
