NEW!!!!  Commentary:  Rev. Steve Heyduck, member Central Texas Annual Conference (posted with permission)
As I read the concern about even the discussion of a schism, I have
to wonder about a few things.

    1) why do so many act like the UMC is a denomination that has been
here forever?  It is younger than I am!

    2)  Bishops and others seem very concerned that we are losing focus
on what is good about our "great" denomination.  What is it that
makes it great?  Would a "great" denomination vote to double
membership in 4 years, then NOT develop a plan to do accomplish it?
Would a "great" denomination wield bureaucratic force to wring
a "fair share" out of congregations?  Would a "great" denomination
protect its clergy with guaranteed lifetime appointments?  Would
a "great" denomination, in response to guaranteed appointments,
create conference and general church positions to protect
    congregations from incompetent clergy?

Maybe I don't get it because I am a "Xer," but what's all the fuss
over the potential breakup of a bureaucracy about, REALLY?

    Peace, Steve
