Methodist conservatives propose formal split over homosexuality
5/6/2004 5:18 PM
By: Associated Press

Several bishops say the proposal is contrary to the spirit of the denomination. They're skeptical that Hinson would win support for his plan.

Bishop William Oden of Dallas says it's a statement that has not been affirmed by any group or caucus in the church.

"Conservatives, however, suggested that they had no intention of actually presenting the proposal to the delegates in Pittsburgh.

Mark D. Tooley, who works at the Institute for Religion and Democracy and directs United Methodist Action, its program focused on Methodists, said in an interview that the proposal was intended not for the delegates here, who are "institutionalists" likely to defend church unity, but for church members and clergy around the country.

The strategy, he said, is to float the idea so it would be embraced by church members around the country, both conservatives and liberals, who would come to see that separation is a practical solution. Four years from now, after the proposal has had time to be thoroughly digested, the actual dismantling of the church could begin to be put in motion when the church meets again for its next general conference, he said.

Mr. Tooley said that conservatives had been hoping to engineer a divorce from liberals for years. He said that a large group of conservative caucuses in the church supported the idea, even though Dr. Hinson said in making his proposal that he was speaking only for himself. .."

Soulforce supporters were also successful in interrupting proceedings at the conference for about 20 minutes on Thursday. The group reports that after the interruption, "hundreds of protestors and several delegates" moved to the third floor of the convention center and continued their rally.

Activists from the pro-homosexual special-interest group Reconciling Ministries are also making their presence known at the entrance of the convention center.

PITTSBURGH - A leading conservative organizer in the United Methodist Church has called for an "amicable separation" of the nation's third largest religious denomination as a way to end 30 years of debate over homosexuality and theology.

The Rev. Jim Heidinger, chief executive officer of Good News, said he personally agreed with Hinson's call, saying he at least wants the church to appoint a task force to begin planning a separation.

"Nobody feels any sense of joy about this kind of thing, but we're looking at a reality," he said. "We sense we're at an utter impasse."

But Mark Tooley of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, another group pressing for conservative changes in mainline Protestant denominations, said his group still hopes for "reform" rather than a division of the United Methodist Church. He favored more public discussion of Hinson's call. ...

NEW!!!! Methodist conservatives propose splitting church
May 6, 2004, 12:06PM
Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- Conservatives in the United Methodist Church proposed splitting the denomination today at a national policy meeting, the latest sign that a decades-long disagreement over homosexuality is worsening.

The Rev. William Hinson, president of the Confessing Movement for conservative Methodists, said evangelicals were just beginning to explore the idea and that no break was imminent in the 8.3 million-member church.

(05-06) 09:26 PDT PITTSBURGH (AP) --

More than 200 people protested the denomination's prohibition against gay sex by disrupting the Thursday morning session. The demonstrators walked onto the floor and the stage where church officials were directing the debate, singing hymns and waiving rainbow streamers and posters for about 20 minutes.

Dozens of delegates and bishops stood up in a sign of solidarity with the protesters before business resumed.

Troubles over homosexuality are continuing to cause division in the United Methodist Church. Bishop Elias Galvan, head of the Pacific-Northwest Conference, said yesterday that if Karen Dammann, an openly practicing homosexual, seeks a clergy appointment within the denomination, he would likely reappoint her.

Meeting in Pittsburgh this week during the United Methodist Church's General Conference, the Judicial Council, the supreme court of global Methodism, ruled Tuesday that individuals, found at church trial to be active homosexuals, may not be appointed to clergy positions within the denomination. The Book of Discipline says that the "practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching." The court also noted, however, that it does not have the right to reverse or reexamine the findings of the Dammann church trial, saying, the prohibition "does not address the case of the Reverend Karen T. Dammann" and shall be applied only "prospectively."

The church continues to practice the sin of exclusion. The church has
also chosen to lie. By refusing to acknowledge "Christians disagree
on the compatibility of homosexual practice and Christian teaching"
by 55%-45% margin, the church lied. The percentages themselves show
the division we experience. Faithful United Methodists do disagree!

(Pittsburgh) Approximately 400 people joined in a peaceful protest
today inside the Convention Center during the United Methodist Church
General Conference being held this week in Pittsburgh, PA.

PITTSBURGH (UMNS) - At 11:10 a.m. May 6, a single drummer slowly beat
a rhythm signaling the beginning of a peaceful interruption of the
2004 General Conference.

The demonstration was led by Soulforce, a gay rights advocacy group.
More than 500 people circled the floor of the conference for 35
minutes carrying banners and singing hymns of reconciliation.

"The drum signals us that there are guests among us," said Bishop
Janice Huie of Arkansas, who was leading the morning session. "They
come in peace as a witness among us. I invite you to embody God's
love to these strangers and friends."

NEW!!!! Daily SQB - 5/06/04

  • Legislation Alert
  • Action Alert
    • The Rev. Scott Field, an organizer for UM Decision 2004, sent a letter to many delegates asking for the reconsideration of calendar item 1119 (DCA, p. 1756).  On Wednesday morning, the General Conference voted to table the item indefinitely by a vote of 492-423. If adopted, this calendar item would give the church the right to appeal a not guilty verdict in a church trial.  MFSA recommends that this item NOT be lifted from the table. The GC wisely decided to put this matter aside in order to give time to consider the serious implications of this radical change to our judicial process.

  • Dr. James Forbes Speaks at Lunch Today
  • River of Life Witness
    • Sometime after 9 a.m. this morning a “River of Life Witness” action sponsored by Soulforce with the permission of the Council of Bishops will take place. It will call The UMC to change its harmful exclusionary policies toward LGBT persons, their families, and friends. Soulforce invites all to participate.  MFSA has tried to witness in a manner which is clear, prayerful, and respectful.  MFSA encourages participation in the action if it is carried out in this same spirit. A rally will follow at  the west outside entrance.  Options for those who do not wish to participate, but who wish to be in solidarity: stand as the procession begins, pray where you are, and/or join in the singing.
