Today's Press Articles on GC2004 (5/3/2004):
Lesbian minister accuses church council
of 'end-run appeal' By ELIZABETH M. GILLESPIE
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER
"SEATTLE -- A lesbian minister
acquitted in a church trial over her sexuality says she figured
her case would be vigorously debated at this year's General
Conference of the United Methodist Church, but didn't expect a
review of whether the verdict should be overturned."

Methodist faces church backlash

"Karen Dammann, a
lesbian pastor who was acquitted last March of violating
Methodist church law, found herself back in the hot seat
last weekend.
On Saturday, the
Methodist's Judicial Council ruled 6-3 that active
homosexuality was incompatible with Christian teaching.
The opinion from the church's high court was a rebuke to
the 13-member jury that found the law too ambiguous to
remove Dammann from the pulpit. "

"The motion for a Declaratory Decision
from the Judicial Council yesterday reflects the effort by
United Methodists to try to understand just how the Karen
Dammann trial court's contradictory verdict could have happened.
It simply made no sense. And it left many questioning whether
commonly-understood passages in the Book of Discipline actually
mean what we thought they did."

"...Your supportive
prayers are needed very much. Already, on Saturday,
the General Conference added these words to the Social
Principles: "We support laws in civil society that define marriage
as
the union of one man and one woman."
This sentence was submitted by Mark Tooley, staff of the anti-gay
Institute for Religion and Democracy (IRD) whose aim is to destroy
the United Methodist Church's traditional theological openness
(which
originated with John Wesley) and undermine our denomination's
ministry, mission, and structure. Among other things, the IRD is
seeking to dismantle General Board of Church and Society ..."
